Fulfilling the Great Commission through Music

The Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is a tropical country located in the Caribbean.  Sharing the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, the Dominican Republic can claim excellent coffee and chocolate production, as well as sugar and many tropical fruits.  Yet, in the midst of this Caribbean paradise is great poverty and spiritual need.  With limited opportunities and often trapped in a religious system that mixes Catholicism with witchcraft and superstition, many young people have very little hope for their future.

We work out of Quisqueyana Baptist Church in Villa Mella, just outside of Santo Domingo, the capital city.  Villa Mella and its surrounding villages is a poverty-stricken area full of physical and spiritual needs.  A “missionary” church that is actively involved in assisting new churches and local evangelism, Quisqueyana Baptist has the theme, “Reaching Villa Mella for Christ.” Currently, there are over 200 children and youth coming to Quisqueyana Baptist with a desire to learn music.
In addition to the church, we have the opportunity to work in a mission school and church in the nearby village of Juan Tomás, where there are over 300 students, grades K-12.  We reach out to these young people through private and group instruction in musical instruments and voice, as well as getting to know them on a more personal level to be able to reach out to them and unsaved family members.
